Mango Season 2026: Best Varieties to Order and Their Health Benefits

Summer in India means one thing above all else: mango season is here. From the fields of Ratnagiri to the orchards of Malihabad, millions of tonnes of mangoes are being harvested right now — and picking the right variety can make all the difference to your plate.

The Big Four Varieties This Season

Alphonso (Hapus) remains the undisputed king. Grown mainly in Maharashtra’s Konkan belt, it’s known for its saffron-coloured flesh, rich sweetness, and short shelf life — which is exactly why ordering it fresh matters more than with any other fruit.

Kesar, grown around Gir in Gujarat, is a close second in popularity. It has a distinct aroma and a slightly tangy-sweet flavour that many people prefer for making mango shakes and desserts.

Langra, from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, has a greenish-yellow skin even when fully ripe, along with a fibrous texture and an intensely sweet taste — a favourite for eating straight off the fruit.

Dasheri, also from the Malihabad belt near Lucknow, is smaller, elongated, and known for its delicate, almost honey-like sweetness.

Why Mangoes Deserve a Place in Your Daily Diet

Beyond the taste, mangoes bring real nutritional value to the table:

  • Vitamin C and A — a single medium mango covers a large share of your daily requirement of both, supporting immunity and eye health.
  • Dietary fibre — helps with digestion, especially useful during the hotter months when appetite and digestion can both dip.
  • Natural antioxidants — compounds like mangiferin found in mangoes have been studied for their anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Potassium — supports healthy blood pressure levels, important during summer when the body loses electrolytes through sweat.

Of course, mangoes are also high in natural sugar, so moderation matters — one to two servings a day is a reasonable guideline for most people.

How to Pick a Ripe Mango

A common mistake is judging ripeness by colour alone. Instead:

  1. Smell the stem end — a ripe mango gives off a sweet, fruity aroma near the stalk.
  2. Gently press the fruit — it should give slightly under light pressure, similar to a ripe avocado.
  3. Avoid mangoes with wrinkled skin or soft spots — these are signs of overripening or bruising.

Ordering Fresh, the StarFruits Way

Because mangoes are so perishable, the gap between harvest and your kitchen matters enormously for both taste and nutrition. Through the StarFruits customer app, orders are routed directly from local vendors and wholesalers, cutting out the multi-day mandi-to-shop journey that often leaves fruit sitting in transit.

Whichever variety you pick this season, try to buy only what you’ll eat within a few days — mangoes taste best (and retain the most nutrition) close to the point of ripening, not weeks after.
